To demonstrate the diverse talents of students in special schools and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Education Bureau, together with the Hong Kong Special Schools Council and the Education University of Hong Kong, organised “SHINE 2022”, a commemoration composed of a series of celebratory activities and a dedicated website. As a finale, “SHINE 2022” held a variety show performed by special school students on 11 August at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wan Chai.

EdUHK took part in the celebratory event with several staff members, students and alumni from the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts (CCA) by getting involved in the creation of the commemoration’s theme song, “Let Your Love Shine”(讓愛閃亮). The piece was composed by Mr Chiu Tsang-hei, a famous song-writer in Hong Kong, with lyrics jointly written by Ms Shing Ying-yu, Principal of the Hong Kong Red Cross Princess Alexandra School, and Mr Tony Chan King-ho, an alumnus from CCA who was also the first tutor of CCA’s Lacov and Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Dr Leung Chi-hin, Assistant Professor at CCA, served as a consultant for the music production work involved with the theme song.

Together with students from 62 special schools across Hong Kong, Helen Leung Hei-lam and Taylor Law Yan-yan, both fifth-year students in CCA’s Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Creative Arts and Culture and Bachelor of Education (Music) co-terminal double degree programme, and CCA alumnus Onion Yeung Sze-huen, now a teacher at PLK Anita L.L. Chan (Centenary) School, sang the theme song. Ms Leung and Ms Law are also tutors for the e-Orch course offered by the EdUHK Jockey Club Youth Academy for Special Education Needs.

Dr Leung said, “Music is for all of us. It often serves as a key that opens the door to learning for students with various kinds of learning difficulties. SEN and non-SEN students singing the song together presented such an awe-inspiring picture. I am so glad that our students and alumni were able to have the opportunity to be involved with the making of the song with other teaching professionals.”
